Why do we love images so much?

engaging intranet and images

One of the most critical objectives for any intranet is to improve communication and interaction throughout the business.

What really matters is how engaged your users are and if you currently have an intranet, do they even use it? Most of the time, the answer is no, they don’t. I am going to focus on top tips for improving imagery and how it will help you boost engagement on your intranet.

Videos and images are more engaging than content alone, so I recommend that you use them to grab users’ attention on your homepages.

Vibrant stock images are always readily available. Here are a few websites for free imagery that I recommend:

If you would rather use your own photos, make sure they’re high resolution and have good lighting. Keep in mind when taking your photos, banners tend to be horizontal so I recommend landscape shots for best results.

So why do we really love images so much?

We’re very visual creatures and without getting too scientific, pictures can be processed by the brain much quicker than written content alone.  In fact, according to research our brains process images 60,000 times faster than they do text!

How can I use this theory to engage intranet users?

If you’re an avid user of social media, you probably spend a lot of time scrolling endlessly past written content until all of a sudden an image grabs your attention, and if it’s a particularly good one, you click it! With this in mind, try using images to promote your message and increase engagement!

Defining what makes an image engaging depends very much on your goals and of the people in your business. Using banners can act like billboards to help to visually grab your attention and get a message out to everyone that visits a homepage.
